What are some of the best areas/apartments in Austin for young hipsters to live?

I'm considering moving to Austin, TX next shool year and attending Austin Community College to get my associates. I've heard a lot of great things about Austin being a liberal, music-loving town, and plan on visiting in March to get a feel for it. I'm just wondering if there are specific neighborhoods that are best for meeting like-minded young hipsters like myself (here in St. Louis, the hipster nieghborhoods are few and far between.) Thanks.|||you want to be near congress just south of the river and around campus. poor hipsters are scattered around Guadeloupe going just north of campus and slightly richer ones near the 1st and the congress st. area just south of the river.

these areas are by no means inexpensive.

they are marked by shops with murals, vegetarian food, vintage clothing stores, art shops, coffee shops, etc. etc. etc.

Some of the homes are hopelessly outdated and suffering from neglect, but somehow speak out with odd colors and varieties of potted plants. You get the picture.

Picture walking down the street and seeing that someone has taken the time to tile a small crack in the sidewalk with odd colored tiles and you go two more steps and someone has painted vegetables as a form of graffiti, then a few more steps and you find a yellow bike that is known in the area as community property.

getting more of the picture. can you smell the patchouli?|||There are some new apartments off of Guadalupe and Lamar that are pretty neat. They have shopping below and are relatively close to campus (UT that is), which means you'll be close to bus routes and to downtown. Many things to do in that area and within walking distance as well.|||South Austin is the hippest-- especially Travis Heights. But it's getting expensive. Some move even further south, but then you may be a hipster, but not environmentally-friendly, because you'd be driving a lot. Hyde Park is also hip, but more expensive. Some are moving into parts of East Austin, which is traditionally a poorer area, but pockets are changing.|||You can live in some nice apartments off the warehouse district, on 5th or so. These are really nice, but on the other hand a 1/1 is around $1400 a month. If thats you thats cool, a better deal though is east of I-35. People will tell you it's "ghetto" but the fact is it is a multi-cultured area with a nice delveloping art scene. Also most of the people in Austin have not seen a real ghetto. This is where I live and I have a 3/2 with all appliances and a yard for $950. Also there is a ACC campus like 10 mins walking over hear and for the Rio Grande campus its only 2 miles. This is what I would recommend, but you should look for yourself. The only place I dont recommend is West Campus. Also Hyde Park is becoming a bit yuppie too, not in a good way if there is a good way.
