What is the best way to drive from San Francisco to Austin?

I'll be driving from San Francisco to Austin starting around the end of July. Any suggestions on possible routes that will take us through some scenic destinations while not straying too far off trail.|||Here's the route I would recommend:

5 South

10 East

290 East (this takes you thru hill country and you bypass San Antonio)

290 is a little confusing as it overlaps other highways, but once you get to Oak Hill (or somewhere close to there) it overlaps 71 (east) and then IH-35 (go North and you'll get to downtown Austin)

From LA, it's about 12 hours to El Paso and then another 11 to Austin thru Hill Country. I would leave LA at 6am, arrrive in El Paso aound 6pm and sleep there. Then I'd hit the road at 6am again the next day. This pretty fast driving and includes stops for gas/fast food/stretches. But watch out for the speed traps. Pay attention to what the truckers are doing in terms of speed and you'll be fine.

There are some cool things to see on the way, so take it slow and enjoy the ride. If you've seen the movie "Tombstone" the town is a nice quickie stop.

Hope this helps!|||fly there|||5 south to 10

10 across to san antonio then north 35 to austin.

Lots of things to see|||In an automobile I guess? Being from the South West of England I wouldn't have a clue, sorry fella.|||I am from England and drove from San D to Austin a few years ago. not sure about getting to 10 but fromm there the earleir answer is fine although come of 10 early via fredricksburg.
