What is the best area in or around Austin to live with an 8 year old?

My family is moving to Austin in August and are looking for the best area for schools, low crime and rental prices. I have heard East Austin is not the best place to live and that the Round Rock and Pflugerville area is. Can someone help. We are currently in Montana and have lived in a big city before, but our biggest concern is commuting to South Austin by the Airport and safe good schools. Our budget keeps us at $1100.00 a month max on rent.|||Try South West / Oak Hill area.
