To renew a license in Austin I would need to take exam?

I just moved from Idaho and my driver's license is not yet expired. But I need to renew my license here in Austin within 30 days.

Do I still need to take a written or computer exam?

What should I expect?|||I just did this a few years ago when I moved here... I don't remember having to re-take the written exam. Just eye exam, picture taking, showing them i.d., and relinquishing my non-texas drivers license.

Also, if you are wanting to go out to a 21+ venue here, make sure you time it right (unless you have a passport or something), because you'll be stuck with just a paper license for a couple of weeks, and nobody will accept that at bars and the like.

Just FYI.

Why did a liberal crash his plane into a building in liberal Austin Texas today?

Now do Democrats understand just how destructive they are to our way of life?

Palin was right, Obama and the Dems pal around with terrorists, like the Austin terrorist who likely voted for Obama, fact.|||The Echelon Building in Austin houses an IRS Office, among other things.

I bet a shiny Buffalo Nickel the pilot was a crazed, Tea-Bagger.|||I just want to know how many days will 0bama wait to address this one? Will he be as quick as he was with Ft. Hood (what was that 3 days?) or will he be as quick as he was when his friend Professor Gates was arrested (a few hours)??? Will he give 3 minutes of "shout outs" before he addresses the issue? Or will he say the fire department "acted stupidly".|||If it was indeed a liberal, then obviously, it was a mile-high club initiation gone bad.|||If you hate us so much, how about growing some balls and doing something about it?

We're daring you, chicken.|||Oh, stop. Let's get the facts first, please.|||Where exactly does it say he was a Liberal?|||Yes... give in to your hatred... kill your father.

:/|||Was the plane liberal too?|||No matter what happens, it's all the fault of liberals...got it.

(Rolls eyes)|||It's not dems or repubs or conservs or libs, it's a third party that controls both sides. Did it ever occur to you that Obama is doing just what Bush would have done, if he had continued being the prez? And by dividing and keeping us fighting with political factions like libs and convervs, dems and repubs, they keep us distracted off of them. It's the old SOP of "divide and conquer."|||Liberal? He's probably more of an anarchist, and if anything spent most of his letter ranting about stereotypical teabagger conserns (not to mention that he crashed into an IRS BUILDING, in liberal Austin, and during a democrat presidency that has has caused all kinds of crazy [even violent] right-wing rage).

All the conservitive media has done for a good year is wide-spread doomsaying and fearmongering, and I would bet that he is a product of this .. even if he does not follow all their dogma to a key.|||I think this one truly was some guy who hated the IRS. I don't think it was driven by him being a liberal or conservative, and I don't think he was directed by anyone. This is the problem with having 10 mass shootings in a year, and all of this other crazy stuff that happens. There are a lot of people in this country, and when people see all of these acts of violence, some of them are going to do things like we saw today.

If you read the suicide note, you can tell this is a very complex guy. He didn't seem crazy, but he believed there was some type of conspiracy with the tax code. Personally, I have a decent understanding of the federal tax code, and I have no idea what he was talking about. He felt their was a conspiracy for rich people to hide money through churches, and that churches shouldn't be tax exempt. This country has got some problems, but the tax code being written to help rich people is not one of them. You could argue that some rich people avoid paying taxes through offshore accounts and other means, but with progressive tax rates rich people clearly pay a higher percentage of taxes than everyone else. This guy was just trying to blame his problems on somebody.

He did seem like a Democrat, but this seemed like an attack against the federal government, and specifically the IRS.|||"Austin terrosist who LIKELY voted for Obama, FACT". That's a fact is it? Did you look up his voting record? Maybe he didn't vote at all, or voted for an independent or someone from another party. It may be hard to believe but more people run for president than two. I can't blame you for not knowing that since the others don't have a lot of money you ******* republicans love so goddamn much. I think it's safe to assume you're republican since you are regurgitating something like what someone like Bill O'Reily would say. He mentions some things in his letter that are right, and that the presidents are puppets. This makes leaves me to believe he wasn't democrat or republican but something else. I would say fact, but I actually know what that word means so I'll refrain.

WHat the **** is wrong with all everyone? Liberal this and conservative that. You sound like a bunch of 12 year old, girly, Twilight fans.

The dude never said he as a democrat. He never said he was a liberal, which believe it or not, are not the same thing. He could have been a republican for all we know, he was afterall, a business man. He didn't say and his anger was directed at problems he had from personal experience.

Get over yourselves, not everything is so goddamn black and white. I understand that when Bush was in office, everyone jumped all over republican conservatives cases about everything. Now the same is happening on the opposite, it never ends. Democrats are more likely to be liberal, but geez I'm sick of everyone throwing that term around without even knowing the definition of a liberal. You look ignorant and all you who respond in agreement sound like sheep. Baaaah mother *******.|||Stop putting this man and this incident into categories. What is the best area to live in Austin, TX?

I'll be relocating from NYC to Austin, TX. Please tell me what is the best area to raise a family in Austin, preferebly not too far from Downtown. Also how much do you pay for car insurance there(Toyota Prius) ? Thank you.|||I have been living in Austin for around 5 years, and I moved from Maryland. I prefer south Austin, but each area has it's over personality. Avoid living east of I35 if you can. South is more laid back, North is more upscale and dressy. Central Austin is expensive. But no matter where you live, you will be 5-15 minutes away from down town, so you are never really very far.

As for car insurance, if varies by provider.|||I know I'm not exactly answering your questions completely, but I will tell you what I know. My brother-in-law and his wife have lived in the Austin area for several years. They moved to a little suburb called Kyle. They apparently enjoy living there because they have been there for at least four years. They have bought a nice house in a nice sub-addition and have had their first child just this passed December. She drives into Austin for work everyday, so that tells you it's not too far away. Personally, I'd opt for a place outside of the city. I'm not a "City Gal". Being from where you're from, you might not mind living in the city. My husband and I have visited Kyle; it seems like a nice little community.|||look for a realtor. ask about the location|||I'm a Realtor in Austin if you want a relocation booklet let me know, I would be happy to help. What kind of neighborhood is Virginia College in Austin in?

I want to go into the Sonography program, but the only 2 schools I've found in Austin are Austin Community College and Virginia College. I saw ACC's Eastview campus (the only campus that offers the Sonography program) and it's in a pretty ghetto neighborhood, which makes me uncomfortable. Is Virginia College the same way? Is it worth my time to go up there?|||You are better off at the Eastview campus area than the Virginia College area. Trust me, I work for the Austin PD, I can tell you much more crime happens around where Virginia College is than Eastview. The good thing about Austin is though, there are many bus routes that head to the ACC campuses. If you don't plan on driving, there are routes coming from everywhere. Good luck!

P.S. Virginia College credits don't transfer to a University in case you ever wanted to continue your education. ACC's do.

How much an hour do you need to make to live in Austin or Dallas?

I am about fed up with how expensive CA is and need to leave! Plus this state is broke! I have heard how affordable it is out it TX. How much would I need to make an hour to survive in TX? Particularly, in the Austin area or Dallas area. Would 10.25 be enough? Oh yeah, I am 24, single and no kids. Thanks!|||Texas is much more affordable than Florida and California. That does come at a price, it's pretty boring in TX. I'd say to survive an OK life maybe $12.50 or $13 in the city maybe a dollar cheaper in a suburb like Denton or Flower Mound. It's a pretty confusing question cause it depends on how you live. I think $10.25 would give you a small apartment in the city with a little spending- pretty hard. I'd say to live frugally $12.50 in the city. Suburb houses are cheap! You can get a great deal right now!To live comfortably, ideally you should make around $14.50 in the city, maybe $13.75 in the suburbs.

Good Luck|||To compare between two different places like CA vs somewhere in Texas, I would use PayScale.com's Cost of Living calculator:

http://www.payscale.com/cost-of-living-c鈥?/a>

I think it would also be best for you to live in DALLAS vs Austin -- Austin is generally a bit more expensive since it is so close to the capitol and generally a cleaner place. Dallas isn't horrible. I would say live in Irving, which is a great place, way safer than Dallas (1 murder, if that, a year in Irving, vs one every other day, and I'm not exaggerating), and close to everything! Hope that link helps.|||If you live frugally and work 40 hours a week, $10.25 should be enough. It depends on if you want to live with a roommate or alone. I have friends with 1 bedroom apartments for as little as $550 a month (keep in mind that this is in Dallas proper - the actual city part of the city - not Dallas county), and I have friends who pay a lot more. I live in a cute 1920's duplex in the historical district and my half of the rent is only $475 plus bills. I have one roommate.|||That's a hard question for someone to answer since we don't know what other bills you have. The links below are "Cost of Living Calculators" where you can enter your expenses in the calculator to see how much it would cost to live in any city or metropolitan area in the U.S.. What is the cheapest way to get from San Antonio to Austin?

Flights are about $80 cheaper for me to go to San Antonio, so if I could get to Austin roundtrip for under $30 I'd probably do it.|||Besides walking, the cheapest method is driving.

The current lowest fuel price for regular gas in San Antonio is $2.06 per gallon. If your car gets an average 22 miles per gallon you would pay 14.83 for the round trip. Now one responder estimates the cost at $0.45 per mile and gives an estimate for driving at $72.00 for the round trip, meaning that there is about $57 in wear and tear on your car. I hope you drive better than a person who puts $57 in wear and tear on their car every 180 miles. Of course that includes the cost of insurance and other costs which your car would have sitting in a parking lot in San Antonio if you didn't take it.

I would like to know if anyone knows of someone in the Austin (Round Rock, Cedar Park) area who is really good at faux finishing? What I'm looking for is someone who is professional and talented who can paint the walls in several rooms of the house. Any suggestions?

Thanks!|||Yes! I know of a lady who does wonderful work and she is very professional!

You should see the before and after photos, it's amazing. She can transform a whole

house! I've seen her take the inside of an ugly house that was built in the early 70's,

that still had all the original ugly stuff and she made it look beautifully modern.

She redid the floors and the walls, and even decorated the place, set it all up, put

some of her art around and it is now a beautiful home.

She's an awesome artist and an awesome person, very dedicated, very honest and

has excellent work ethic!

Her name is Treva Williamson and her website is http://www.fauxnart.com/

Is it Possible to go to School in Austin or Phoenix without a Car?

I'm not going to be able to take my car with me when I transfer out of state from Richmond,Virginia. I am looking at schools out of state and would like to work, live and go to school in either downtown Phoenix, Arizona or Austin, Texas.

Is it possible to live without a car in either cities and still have a fun life. A lot of college students here in Richmond don't have cars so they have to make friends with people with cars, and/or only work, play and live downtown.|||yes actually! I went to school in Austin for a few years without a car and had no problems. Now I live in Tempe (right next to Phoenix) and still have no car and I do fine. Sometimes it's a hassle trying to deal with the busses, but it's not too bad. I'd say in Austin it's probably easier and more reliable to use public transportation than in Phoenix though. Austin is also more college student friendly, downtown Phoenix is kinda sketchy.

What is the best Barbecue place in Austin Texas?

My team and I are going to Austin Texas for a tournament and want to have the best barbecue we ever had. Any suggestions on where to go in Austin?|||Salt Lick BBQ, just north of Austin in Round Rock. Amazing and well worth the drive.|||Here is a list of some BBQ spots around town that I enjoy. I will present them in no particular order and will try to provide a brief overview of each locations' specialties.

* Salt Lick (original location in Driftwood) - Their family-style dining atmosphere is something everyone needs to experience. It is well worth it for you to load up a cooler of beer, head down south, and feast for a couple of hours

* Stubb's - Great rubs and marinades, but the bbq there has always been hit or miss for me. However, their sides (fried green tomatoes, cream spinach, etc.) have always been top notch.

* The Green Mesquite - Good all-around bbq for any occasion. They have especially good brisket.

* Rudy's - It is a Texas chain and is known for its smoked turkey, chopped beef, and of course, the sauce.

* Ben's Long Branch - This is a classic East Austin experience. Great chicken, ribs and brisket. ***update*** The name has changed, but it is still in the same location and still uses Ben's great recipes.

* Artz Rib House - The name says it all. Get the large order of their country style ribs. (this is one of my favs)

* Chief's BBQ - Another one of my favs. A great little hole-in-the-wall in South Austin that has good all-around offerings, and their sauce is very different and very good.

* Iron Works BBQ - Good all-around bbq and their specialty is beef ribs.

*County Line - pretty good all-around bbq and their specialty is smoked turkey. They use to offer great homemade bread, too.

* Uncle Billy's Brew and Cue - Serves decent bbq and brews their own beer - not a bad combination.

* There are also many great and historic bbq joints within an hour's drive of Austin, so I would definitely recommend making some road trips to any of these places:

Lockhart, TX - Blacks BBQ, Kreuz BBQ, and Smitty's Market

Llano, TX - Laird's and Inman's

Mason, TX - Cooper's

Elgin, TX - Southside Market

Seguin, TX - Davila's

Taylor, TX - Taylor Cafe

Belton, TX - Schoepf's

Waco - Vitek's

Is Stone Cold Steve Austin vs The Rock possible for the Wrestlemaina 25?

I've heard many rumours that there is going to be a special match between these two, possibly at Wrestlemaina 25. Even FHM quoted in an interview with Stone Cold Steve Austin that "It is inevitable that the Rock and Stone Cold will renew their rivalry some day in the future" . The Rock would only be interested in wrestling someone who he has never wrestled, but always wanted to wrestle. The Rock always wanted to wrestle Sting, but Sting has never been under contact to the WWF/WWE. Steve Austin would also be interested in wrestling Hulk Hogan, but I don't think he would trust him. What part of Austin Texas is best to live?

My boyfriend and I are traveling across the country, but were looking to settle down for a bit and save some money. Were thinking Austin might be a good place for that.

Were looking for a music friendly artsy area, but safe of course

Any ideas?|||Try Barton Creek...it's very good. San Marcos and Pflugerville are excellent.

Enjoy your time!|||Your answer would depend on your definition of "safe". Austin is a very dynamic place, and the neighborhoods are constantly changing their personalities. For example, the East Side, which I would define as the general area to the east of downtown and I-35, south of 14th or so street, and north of the river used to be a "rough neighborhood", but it's recently been undergoing gentrification due to the influx of young people to Austin. Lots of young professionals and creative people are finding really cool places to live there, but as a result of the gentrification, many surrounding neighborhoods such as the University of Texas campus area (West Campus) and North Loop (53rd street) have been getting a little bit sketchier.

In short, however, I would say you should look at Bouldin Creek, which is just a little bit south of a river, but still only a brisk walk away from downtown, and has a reputation as being one of the older colorful hippie neighborhoods in town. On the other hand, North Loop is a slightly grungier area, but is very comfortable as well, and has a character all its own. To reach downtown, one would need to use a bus, car, or bike, though. I don't personally have too much experience with the East Side, but it is definitely one of the more dynamic neighborhoods, and I would recommend at least giving it a one-over before you make your decision.

What is the best place for shopping in austin for indie/vintage style cheap clothing?

i am looking for decent guys clothing with a price to match. where should i check out here in austin?|||Well, you can go to this awesome, in my opinion, local vintage/indie/goth/industrial/punk shop called Secret Oktober in South Austin. I've shopped there many times before, and I usually go before I attend an anime con to buy whatever I need. I HIGHLY recommend this shop. And, yes, they do sell men's clothing, shoes, accessories, and etc. Prices are pretty reasonable, and there's that occasional item that's over $100+, but even if they're a bit pricey, it's still worth it. I once bought brand new leather pants there for a cosplay, and I only paid $1, yes, one dollar. And once you get there, make sure to check out the sale rack on the sidewalk, you can find GREAT stuff on that wonderful rack in really low prices.

Why do liberals feel compelled to politicize the Austin plane crash for their own cynical agenda?

Liberals never miss a chance to exploit human tragedy to promote their cynical political agenda.

Today's plane crash suicide in Austin is the latest example. In his suicide note, the person ranted against Reagan and Bush, then ended his note with a rant against capitalism after quoting Marx.

What is average electric bill in summer in Austin based on SQ Footage?

My electric bill for a 3100 Sq. House is 860 per month this summer. I am new in Austin. I am wondering how far out of average range this is. Can someone share their experience. I don't have gas at all.|||It seems high, but if you have vaulted ceilings, recessed lighting, West-facing windows, insufficient insulation, two stories, a pre-1993 fridge, leaky attic duct work, black roof shingles, etc, etc, etc it will add up on your electric bill.

I do know that most everyone's electricity usage doubled from May to June, since it was the hottest June on record and the vast majority of most people's usage is for air conditioning.

You can always give Austin Energy a call for an energy audit, and also check your meter and make sure your actual usage is in line with what they are billing you for, because they often will estimate it (if you don't have one of the new meters) since they don't check the meters every month in lots of places.

Ours was $40 for electric in June, but our house is only 720sf and we have a lot of energy saving upgrades.

http://www.austinenergy.com/energy%20eff鈥?/a>|||I'm in nearby San Antonio. When we first arrived, our 950 sq ft apt had a bill of $300+ each month the first summer. We thought that was normal, coming from cooler temperatures and swamp coolers. Well, it wasn't. Turned out the air conditioning unit needed to be serviced and we had poor insulation and weather stripping.

I know we don't share municipal services, but you should probably expect a bill 1/10 of your total square footage. We now own a 1700 square foot house and our electric bills rarely hit $200 now. On average, $170 is reasonable. Our rates just went up though, so they'll probably hit $200+ more often now.

Also consider how you conserve. Our home is Energy Star certified, with the best insulation, windows, and appliances to conserve energy. The builder does it standard, so we didn't pay extra. We also use only energy-saving bulbs, which are expensive to start with, but lower the monthly cost. We also *try* to keep lights and TV's off when someone's not in a room (when I say "we" I mean I am my kids' lightswitch nazi). We also turn computers off at night and have a thermostat that regulates temperature throughout the day (75 at night and while we're gone, and 72 when we're home).

Often, the electric company will do free energy conservation assesments, sending someone to your house to check your weather seals on your doors %26amp; windows and help identify energy sinks in your house.

If you're taking the proper conservation steps and your bill is still high, you should have your air conditioning unit serviced.|||It actually depends on the age of your house. If you have an older home you may be able to contact the electric company and the city and get a list of utilities that will help reduce your bill and give you a few perks. I know they give a rebate on energy efficient utilities and they also have an energy program to help reduce your bill.

Thanks,

Tone

Is it Possible to go to School in Austin or Phoenix without a Car?

I'm not going to be able to take my car with me when I transfer out of state from Richmond,Virginia. I am looking at schools out of state and would like to work, live and go to school in either downtown Phoenix, Arizona or Austin, Texas.

Is it possible to live without a car in either cities and still have a fun life. A lot of college students here in Richmond don't have cars so they have to make friends with people with cars, and/or only work, play and live downtown.|||Phoenix has a GREAT public transit system. I went to college there with no car and it was a breeze. There is a bus for every major street and lots of minor ones too. There are plenty of express routes as well and now they also have a light rail. You can get a monthly bus pass for cheap and they're pretty darn reliable time-wise. Because of all the colleges in the area, there are also a lot of starter jobs for college students.

You also need to keep in mind that the transit system stretches to Tempe as well so it's not like it keeps you stuck within Metro Phoenix. Scottsdale, Tempe, Chandler, Peoria, etc are all easily reachable via public transport. Public transport is never a 100% clean or creepy people free experience, but compared to a lot of cities, Phoenix has a great system going. I used it the entire time I was going to college there and never had a problem. Sometimes I'd even bike part way and throw my bike on the front of the bus for part of the ride. Because it's so hot in the summer, they really have to have a good public transit system or no one would get anywhere =) You can't walk or bike when it's 120.

For the first summer you'll be telling people "DRY HEAT MY @$$!!!!" but you will get used to it. The first time you fly home to Richmond during the summer, you'll see what I mean. I was always poo-pooing "dry heat" until I stepped off a plane in Chicago when it was 89 (100% humidity) and I couldn't breathe. You don't sweat when it's 120 in Phoenix either. Well, you do, but because of the low humidity it just evaporates. You're hot, but you're not uncomfortable.|||there is a public transportation service in the Phoenix area, plus, it's likely you will meet people that also go to your school, maybe an opportunity to car pool

Moving to Austin, Texas and I need some helpful information?

Okay, so me and my friend are planning on moving to Austin, we wanna know what parts of the city are the safest, fun and affordable. Any additional knowledge would be great. Thank you!|||I have lived in austin for a while now and have lived in some of the WORST parts of the city. If you are looking for the better safer apartment areas, go for the NW area of town. There are always tons of apartments near the arboretum area and there are also a lot of them off Far West and Mopac that are affordable. They aren't the best quality b/c they're all pretty old, but the neighborhood isn't too bad, just a lot of college students. I have 2 daughters. I need it to be affordable but I don't want to live on the wrong side of the tracks! I'll be working in Austin but don't mind a commute.|||While Northeast, East and Southeast Austin do have some hidden gems, the overwhelming majority of these neighborhoods are bad (high rates of poverty, homelessness, crime, pollution, etc.). North, Northwest, and Central Austin neighborhoods are typically much nicer than those mentioned above, but the crime rates in these areas are some of the highest in the city. South and Southwest Austin are two of the safest options in town.

If you are raising a family and are in your mid 20s-early 30s, then I would recommend that you check out the southwest side of town. More specifically, you should check into the neighborhoods off of Stassney and Emerald Wood, Brodie and Alexandria (Maple Run), Westgate and William Cannon. You will not only be able to find some great houses in good, safe neighborhoods but also invest in some property that will continue to increase in value with the growth of the surrounding areas. Additionally, South Austin is old Austin, so there is more of a culture and community vibe.

If you are interested in schools, Austin ISD has a great transfer policy. There are plenty of good schools in the district to choose from, so your educational options won't be limited by the area in which you choose to reside.

Am I crazy to move from the Pacific Northwest to Austin TX?

We currently live in Washington state but are seriously considering moving to Austin. Our main reason for moving is to get away from the cold and rain. I love heat and humiditiy (have lived in Florida) so that is not an issue. We have researched schools, houses, etc and visited Austin so if we move, that is where we will go. My husband can keep his job and work from home. Everyone up here seems to think we are crazy for moving to Texas though! I love the outdoors (hiking, etc) but hate the cold so much that I can only be outside about 4 months a year up here. Has anyone made a similar move? Any advice our opinions? I dont' want to regret this! Thanks.|||I made this same move several years ago (Seattle to Austin) and it was a great move for me. I really just prefer sun and heat (I love the summers here in Austin) so Seattle was just not a good fit for me (I do not miss having to carry around coats in summer for the second the sun went down!), and I would never consider moving back. My quality of life increased so much just because of the climate change, that nothing else really mattered (like the fact that I make less money, job market is still a little tight, minimal public transportation, etc). People thought Texas was a weird choice for me as well, but that was just because none of them had ever been. I'll admit I was a little nervous at first because of the Texan stereotypes, but I haven't found any of them to really be true in Austin (except for people are friendlier here, that's true).|||Austin is great, i moved here from cali last november. it's definatly different from the west coast... most people are alot nicer!! housing is great, not nearly as expensive as the west coast... theres alot of things to do and its very diverse.. you will run into alot of different people here... jobs are great cuz its the tech hub of the country.. i live around the corner from dell and samsung. so if your wanting to move to texas.. austin is the perfect choice~!|||We moved from CT to 2 blocks outside of Dallas, Texas. That was over 20yrs ago, no regrets! We currently live about 24 miles from Dallas, just outside of McKinney, so we're 6 miles from the nearest gas/groceries, not out in the sticks, but very pleasant. The only thing about your decision I would question is the city, Texas has a low cost of living, but Austin has the highest in the state. Why not McKinney, San Antonio or a hill country town like Fredericksburg? Depending on what you want to be near.

Below is some info I previously put togethe:r

If you want to be in the city then Dallas or Fort Worth, but there are small towns like Lucas within commuting range so you can have the best of both worlds. McKinney is less than 30 minutes from Dallas %26amp; is growing but still real pleasant, Lowry Crossing or Princeton are real short hops from there but offer nice homes not double-wides, on land, for great prices, like 1,900 sq ft on 1 acre for around $155k. If you like the coast, consider Galveston or Corpus Christi. Avoid Houston, it is over-populated due to refugees from Katrina. Cost of living is much lower in TX and there is a huge range of terrain and climate.

One of the best things with Cities in Texas, if you can work a schedule that is a little off the normal hours, traffic isn't bad. Living in the McKinney area gives us country living but short drives to all the amenities of the city. Dallas museums, opera, symphony, landmarks, restaurants, race tracks (dirt track, drag racing, TX Motorspeedway for NASCAR). Hospitals in McKinney, Allen, Plano, Richardson, Dallas: Healthsouth, Presbyterian, Baylor etc.

It is important to understand the difference between driving commutes in other states/TX; if I work late the I can make the 27 mile route home from Dallas, in 35 minutes, w/o breaking the speed limit, as there are only 2 lights %26amp; 1 Stop sign. At rush hour I take back roads, 24 miles, yet still make the trip in under an hour, sometimes as quick as 45 minutes.

Helpful Texas sites below, some of the places are a ways from Dallas, like Galveston at 300 miles, but due to open highways that's only 5-6 hours, most folks think nothing of making a run like that for a 3 or 4 day weekend. Email me any questions:

http://www.mesquiterodeo.com|||No, you are not crazy. The weather's great and so is the city. From a political standpoint, Austin is very much like the northwest and the entire west coast, so it won't be very different from that aspect. Lots of people come here from California for many reasons, so you are not the only one to make a "drastic" move to Texas. Not all of us are cowboys. lol|||No, you are not crazy. I am native Texan and moved to Washington State. I lasted almost 2 years before I had to move. The sun never came out and it rained all the time. The cost of living was outrageous and you could not get any good Mexican food. After 2 years I moved to Florida and have never been sorry. I would prefer to be back in Texas (that's where all the family is) but until I can transfer Florida is fine.|||Sounds like a good idea to me, especially with your husband being able to keep his job. You definitely won't be as cold! Good luck to you both in your move!!!!|||I live in San Antonio. San Antonio could also be possibly a good move, although it is slightly more humid here. But, Austin is fantastic! The city in general is beautiful! The small epicenter of metropolitan area of downtown is clean, easy to maneuver (unlike San Antonio's downtown area) and delightful to walk around in. The parks are fabulous and kept clean, the lakes and rivers are abundant and the view is spectacular. The culture is diverse, interesting, and is a mecca of musical diversity and variety. It is a perfect place to raise a family, has a great history of education (schooling and career choices), and plenty of activities for all age groups. The cost of living is affordable (in certain areas, as with any other place some places are higher) and choices abound.

Altogether I would say that it is an ideal move. San Antonio (a larger populated city with a larger Hispanic population and culture) is only an hour away (with Six Flags and Sea World), Houston 5 hours away, and Dallas/Ft. Worth only 3-4 hours drive. So, Austin is a great central base to operate out of as well.

Great choice in relocation consideration and we welcome you and see you soon!...lol

The skies are bigger in Texas....one advantage of smaller trees.

as for rainfall. We have more rain than LA...hope that helps.

almost all of the heavily populated areas voted dem. in the last election..

Austin has more book sales per ca pita than anywhere else in the country I hear.

economically it's likely the best place to be right now.

at least people in WA have an opinion about us...|||Where do you live in Washington? It's not cold there.
